Collection consists primarily of the papers of U Thant, 1961-1971 (337 cubic ft., 280.8 linear ft.). Also included are the papers of Dag Hammarskjöld, 1952-1961, including summary records (minutes) of private meetings, press releases, and miscellaneous reprints, 1946-1961. Records, 1946-1951, are from the tenure of Trygve Lie as Secretary-General. Also contains minutes, 1957-1963, of various advisory committees including the Advisory Committee on the United Nations Emergency Force, 1957-1959, and the United Nations Advisory Committee on the Congo, 1961-1963, and others. Records consist of correspondence, cables, minutes, press releases, and many other types of documents reflecting the activities of U Thant and Dag Hammarskjöld in their roles as Secretary-General of the United Nations, as well as some miscellaneous documents from the tenure of Trygve Lie. Of note are Hammarskjöld's correspondence, cables, and other records concerning the United Nations Operations in the Congo, 1960-1964; and some private papers of U Thant dating from both before and after his tenure as Secretary-General, including the manuscript of his book THE VIEW FROM THE UN.

The United Nations Operation in the Congo (ONUC - the acronym comes from the French translation Organisation des Nations Unies au Congo) was established in 1960 to provide military assistance, to maintain order and protect Congolese unity, and to provide emergency and operational technical assistance.
